KPIs and/or PMO Alone are a Waste of Time

Common Mistakes People Make
- Many use KPI as a management tool for Performance Improvement in Operations; i.e.: to either reduce cost or to improve productivity. Some even combine KPI with a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Compliance with Regulations (A penalty avoidance initiative).
- Engaging a third party Management Consulting to assist a company in the implementation of either KPI and/or Project Management Office (PMO). This is like hiring a witch doctor to copy and paste generic answers.
- Implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or some kind of computerization.
Tools/Technologies are merely accelerator of momentum. They on their own will not do you much good.
The Real Problems
Or root causes if you like, need to be addressed. You have got to Confront the Brutal Facts.- Often the number one culprit is the head(s) with outdated knowledge and/or skills (because skills get outdated overtime). And, it is usually difficult to detect him/her because:
a. He/she is not the one directly doing the work and hence there is no wrong-doing by him/her.
b. He/she does not have the necessary hands-on experience but has the authority to recruit additional staff(s)/skill set(s). Dividing the same work into too many tiny tasks can lead to workplace conflict.
c. He/she could be the blue-eyed boy/girl of the boss.
The defective person is usually not a humble person. And, He/she achieves something at the expense of others.
- A Correctly Planned and Developed management tool should assess both the quality and quantity of the work. Doing the quantity part instead of quality may seem to be the easy way out for many.
Points to ponder: First Who then What, which means you need to first get the right people into the right job then the direction and the know hows.
In addition,
- People are reluctant to change. I am, who isn't?
- Auditors’ signoffs. Reliable?
